Contemporary Bestearies: When worlds collide

Photogrammetry scans, dead insects, engraved micriosope slide, engraved
2025

This installation features photogrammetry scans, dead insects, and engraved glass plates with insect illustrations inspired by drawings made by workshop participants. The engravings and digital scans show how insects are not only observed but also interpreted using human techniques. The drawings offer a human, imaginative interpretation of the insect world, similar to the anthropomorphisation of animals in bestiaria, where animals were depicted with moral messages.

Photogrammetry scans are meant to produce hyper-realistic renderings; instead, distorted, fragmented images are produced. The insects are formed by technical structures that guide our perception. The engravings in the stone supports of the glass plates give a nod to enclosure movement and witchcraft processes. The installation refers to how power is embedded in both landscape and vision and questions how our perception affects our relationship with these often overlooked creatures.
